Spooky & Cute Pennant Banners

Updated: Oct 20, 2020

My favorite part of the year is here. Love last 4 months of the year, not just because it is my hubby's and kids birthdays but also Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are so close that I can start decorating our home and plan family gatherings for upcoming holidays. As with most of the families, we live on set budget but that doesn't stop us from having as much fun as we can with our loved ones. I put myself in charge of decorations, what can be done without spending too much money. Grateful for Pinterest, there are so many amazing DIY projects. So this year project I am going for, is easy, no cost out of my pocket as I already have all the supplies, cute and fun.

Some call it Pennant Banner or Bunting Banner.

Supplies needed:

  • 1 piece of paper

  • Pen

  • Ruler

  • Cotton Fabric quarters (pick colors & print that you desire)

If you pick print that can be cut in one direction due to placement of the print - you will need about 2 fabric quarters to get 3-4 flags, depending on placement of the print.

If you pick plain fabric or print that can be cut in any direction - from one fabric quarter, you can get 4 flags

  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter

  • Wide Double Sided Bias Tape (get enough depending how long do you want your Pennant to be)

  • Sewing Machine

  • Thread (get it to match color of your Bias Tape)

  • Sewing clips or pins

First step:

On the piece of paper, use ruler to measure triangle 8inch wide at top, 9 inch length in the middle. Trace triangle and cut. That is now your pattern for flags.

Second step:

Fold fabric.

Use your flag pattern to cut fabric. Cut 2 for 1 flag.

I usually pick enough 4- 5 different fabric colors / prints and cut 4 flags from each. This will give you 15-20 flags.

Additional step to this is that you can make different fabric combinations as I wanted to make one for Candy Corn

For these it is little extra work but it is all worth it at the end. Make few pairs before you move to next step.

Third step:

Put each flag RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER and using your machine sew sides only, leave opening at the top.

Complete this for all the flags.

Fourth step:

Clip top right / left corners and also bottom corner.

Trim sides

Complete this for all the flags

Fifth step:

Turn flags inside out.

Use thin long object that will help you push bottom corner as much out as possible. Be careful when you do this. Do it slowly so you do not poke hole out.

Sixth step:

Iron all flags.

Seventh step:

Take your Double Wide Sided Bias Tape and open it so you can insert flags in between. Use sewing clips or pins to keep flags in position.

I left about 10 inches from beginning and then started adding flags and also 10 inch at the end, so it can act as ties. Also, leave 2 inch space in between each flag.

Eight step:

Sew starting from beginning of Bias tape. Use zig zag stitch width 2, length 2.

You did it!

Scroll down to see final some pictures of few that I have made.

Using combination of different colors and prints, you can make amazing decoration for your home for any celebration. Now I want to make different ones for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and you have fun making these and decorating your home as much as I did.
